Nuremberg is a city in the German state of Bavaria, in the administrative region of Middle Franconia. It is situated on the Pegnitz river and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.

Nuremberg is a lively city of about half a million inhabitants, with a visible history of almost one thousand years. Nuremberg is a city "of wit", where inventiveness and the researchers' curiosity have found a home. Nuremberg is a high performance economic location.

Nuremberg is an open, tolerant city with a very high quality of life. And Nuremberg is the centre of a European metropolitan region with 2.5 million citizens.

Nuremberg is one of Europe's fastest growing trade fair locations. Every year, over 1,2 million people visit about 100 events and about 50 specialist trade fairs and congresses, including the world's largest specialist trade fair for toys.

Nuremberg offers a wide variety of events catering for all tastes. Opera or ballet in the State Theatre, children's culture and cultural events in various city districts, cabaret and so on – the programme is huge. Particularly popular: numerous music festivals such as for example "Rock in the Park", the "Bardentreffen" world music festival or the two classic open air concerts in the summer, luring over 100,000 music fans to Luitpold Grove for a festive picnic.

Nuremberg's life is colourful all year round. It is green mainly in the places where Nuremberg citizens like to spend time in the summer – in the landscaped, near-natural river meadows of the River Pegnitz, in the parks, in the Field of Experiences for all the Senses, and in one of Europe's largest and most beautifully landscaped zoos. Thanks to the good public transport network, attractive destinations, for example for surfing in the Franconian Lake District or rock-climbing in the Fränkische Schweiz, are within easy reach.

These sights are worth of your attention without doubt:

Nuremberg Castle: the three castles that tower over the city including central burgraves' castle, with Free Reich's buildings to the east, the Imperial castle to the west.

Heilig-Geist-Spital is one of the largest hospitals of the Middle Ages, it was founded in 1332. The Hospital of the Holy Spirit stands in the centre of the city, on the bank of the river Pegnitz. Lepers were kept here at some distance from the other patients. It now houses elderly persons and a restaurant.

Hauptmarkt provides a picturesque setting and famous market for gingerbread. You can find here Gothic Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) which was erected around 1385 (the original fountain is kept in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum). The unchanged Renaissance bridge Fleischbrücke crosses the Pegnitz nearby.

The following churches are located inside the city walls: St. Sebaldus Church, St. Lorenz church (the main body was built around 1270-1350), Our Lady's Church, Saint Klara, Saint Martha, Saint Jakob, Saint Egidien, and Saint Elisabeth.

The Tiergarten Nürnberg is a zoo stretching over more than 60 ha in the Nürnberger Reichswald. It is the home of Flocke, an orphan polar bear cub who in 2008 became a major attraction and a figure of a large publicity campaign for Nuremberg's metropolitan region.
